Backpacking is probably one of the most enjoyable activities you can do. It cuts travel expenses and awakens the adventurer inside of you. With your home on your back, the world is your oyster. But with so many factors to consider such as weight, easy set-up and weather resistance, it’s much harder to navigate the list claiming to be the best backpacking tent of 2017.
So, we’ve done the homework for you, and here’s our 5 picks coming up as the ultimate best backpacking tent 2017:
Name: Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2
Price Range: $320 – $430
Features: Big Agnes means big backpacking business. It’s a sturdy refuge offering great comfort and light to carry. It offers decent space with more than enough room for a backpacking couple. It also comes with helpful extras such as two doors, roomy vestibules and the various interior pockets means no longer rummaging around in bags for bits and bobs. You won’t be left in the dark, since it comes with integrated lights in the Copper Spur HV UL2mtnGLO. It also comes in a lightweight 52.6 oz. packaging.
Perfect for: From climbing the Alps to long distance backpacking adventure trips.
Comparison: If you compare the Big Agnes to the Hilleberg Anjan, it’s not quite as durable and might not be able to withstand that ultimate storm, but it kept us dry during rainy nights. You won’t need to fork out quite as much for the Agnes as the Anjan and it’s also not quite as heavy as the Anjan.
Name: Tarptent Double Rainbow
Price Range: $289
Features: Lightweight usually comes attached to a pretty hefty price tag. The Tarptent is truly worth its weight in gold. It’s made of high-quality, durable materials withstanding the test of time and the elements. It easily fits two people and if you’re six-feet-tall, you can rest assured of a good stretch. This tent is geared for action. The rectangular shape means that there is space for your gear at your feet and the large vestibules offer space for any extra gear you may have. Set-up is simple with a single middle pole.
Perfect for: Lightweight backpacking
Comparison: Compared to the rest of our list of best backpacking tents 2017 (To learn more please visit http://www.gadgetreview.com/best-backpacking-tent), the Tarptent is the best value for money. It’s just important to keep in mind that this is not a free standing tent, so it may be a challenge on harder ground. Weather proving can also prove to be tricky if the directions are not followed correctly.
Name: REI Half Dome 2 Plus
Price Range: $219
Features: This is the life! Comfort away from all the conventional comforts. It is spacious, and the interior and construction was designed with taller people in mind, those who like travelling with their pets or can’t leave those little extra luxury items behind. It has great ventilation. Not quite so lightweight, though.
Perfect for: Comfortable camping. Best for occasional, short-duration trips, especially car camping.
Comparison: Best value for money – even if you compare it to models such as the NEMO Galaxi 2. The Half Dome gets our Best Buy Award on our list of best backpacking tents 2017.
Name: NEMO Blaze 2P Ultralight
Price Range: $450
Features: The Blaze has a lot of head room with two doors. Two vestibules offer extra storage, and this lightweight comes with the feeling of pure luxury. Although it has room for two, our solo adventurers are not left out as the Blaze also comes in a one person model. Probably making the Blaze feature on our best backpacking tents 2017 list twice.
Perfect for: Lightweight backpacking – any trip including climbing missions.
Comparison: Compared to the Double Rainbow, the NEMO wins the title as lightweight champion, although by two ounces. It’s also very competitive when it comes to space-weight-ratio. You do pay a bit of a price for the weight saving. Although cleverly engineered with a single pole that crosses diagonally across the body of the tent which then anchors at opposite corners, the other corners are staked out. It might take a while figuring out.
Name: Hilleberg Anjan 2
Price Range: $645
Features: He can huff and he can puff, but the Hilleberg is going nowhere. This is the ultimate weather resistant tent. Its exceptional durability and strength doesn’t make this a beast to carry and still holds the perfect weight balance at 57 ounces. It also offers a lot of comfort. To say that the Hilleberg in an overachiever would be an understatement. You can also upgrade to the Anjan 2 GT which boasts even more extra space.
Perfect for: If you are an avid camper, this would be your best option as it stretches across the seasons; from the thaw of spring to the winter squall. It’s perfect for backpacking trails, bike touring, car camping or at your local park.
Comparison: Compared to the other best backpacking tents 2017, it is a little bit more on the pricier side. But it makes up for it in strength and durability, which makes it the perfect long-term investment.
